HENRY GILBERTSON (1909-1978). Papers; 1960-1975. 4 cu. ft.
Henry Gilbertson was born in Sisseton, South Dakota, in 1909. He received his M.A. degree from Montana State University and served for four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During the 23 years he lived in Alaska, he worked with the state-operated schools. He was Director of Education for the North Star Borough in Fairbanks, Superintendent of Schools in Wasilla, and a member of the Central Alaska Teachers' Association. He held a life certificate as a school administrator from the State of Alaska. In 1963, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study comparative education in Britain and Norway. Henry Gilbertson retired in 1975 and died three years later (January 1978).
This collection is divided into seven series: I) Personal Papers - containing correspondence, materials related to Gilbertson's career, and a memoriam by the Alaska State Legislature; II) Alaska Department of Education, State Operated Schools, Administrative files, annual reports, administrative manual, information on the closure of the Anchorage Field Office, board minutes, and materials concerning school supplies and surplus property; III) Schools - including reports concerning rural school descriptions, capital improvement needs, health inspections, accreditation standards, population and pupil statistics, transfer of BIA School, Native Claims Settlement Act, and confidential files concerning personnel problems (restricted); IV) School Maintenance - containing information on buildings and locations of rural schools, information on rental and condition of housing for teachers at rural schools, general maintenance information, electrical maintenance information, information on fuel oil for rural schools, and information on Department of Education properties; V) Miscellaneous Publications - which concerns the Alaska School System and employees, and general Alaska publications; VI) Photographic Slides - consisting of over 1500 images of Alaskan rural schools and scenery; and VII) Photographs - consisting of 43 images of Alaskan rural schools and scenery.
The collection was placed in the archives by Ann Gilbertson in 1982. Mrs. Gilbertson added slides, photographs, and the proceedings from her husband's Fulbright Scholarship seminars in 1987. A deed of gift was signed in 1987.

This series is divided into the following six sections: 1) School Reports, which concerns rural school descriptions, school health inspections, and capital improvement needs for schools; 2) School Accreditation Standards for State Schools; 3) Individual Local Schools, which contains material on the schools in Cold Bay, the Pribilofs, and Circle; 4) Population and Pupil Statistics, which contains census data on school enrollment, the Alaskan Native population and the over all Alaskan population; 5) Miscellaneous School Files, which concerns the Bureau of Indian Affairs School transfer, the impact of the Native Claims Settlement Act, and Department of Education travel to rural schools; 6) An easement request concerning the establishment of a road at Sand Point School; and 7) Confidential Closed Files concerning personnel problems at the schools in Circle and Pribilofs.

The series is divided into the following six sections: 1) School Facilities Inventory, which contains information on the buildings and locations of rural state operated schools; 2) Community and Teacher Housing, which concerns the rental and physical conditions of housing for teachers at rural schools; 3) General Maintenance, which concerns maintenance problems and needs, and custodial staffing for rural schools; 4) Electrical Maintenance and Supply, which concerns the purchase and use of electricity by rural schools, the sale of electricity and the type of generating equipment at each rural school; 5) Fuel Oil Storage and Supply, which concerns the purchase and bulk storage capacity of fuel oil for rural schools; and 6) Department of Education Properties, which concerns a land deed from the federal government to the State of Alaska, and the building lease for the central offices of the Department of State Operated Schools.
