JEROME F. SHELDON. Papers; n.d., 1885-1994. 9.75 cu.ft.

Jerome Sheldon first came to Alaska in 1942 with the U.S. Army's 18th Engineer Regiment. He worked on the building of the Alaska Highway and also helped build an air base on Shemya Island in the Aleutians. After the war, Sheldon was a newspaperman in Oregon and California. He moved to Fairbanks in 1954, where he was news editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. After two years he moved to Anchorage and became the public relations officer for the Alaska Railroad. Sheldon later returned to the Fairbanks newspaper as night editor, while also running an Alaska clipping service. He later became involved with newspapers in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Palmer. Sheldon left Alaska in 1979. He has since written free-lance articles on Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

This collection consists of the papers of journalist Jerome F. Sheldon. The collection is divided into six series: Alaska Subject Files, Miscellaneous Subject Files, Alaska Historical Files, Alaska Story Files, Miscellaneous Alaska Subject Files, and Alaska Publications. The Alaska Subject Files include correspondence, clippings, newspapers, photographs, and articles primarily concerning Alaska and northern topics. The Miscellaneous Subject Files concern a variety of non-Alaska topics. The Alaska Historical Files include correspondence, notes, articles, book excerpts, other research materials, and partial book manuscripts by Sheldon on Alaska history and Donald MacDonald II, proponent of the Alaska Highway. These files concern the history of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, with the bulk of materials relating to the building of the Alaska Highway, Donald MacDonald II, the U.S. Army 18th Engineer Regiment, and the Canol Pipeline Project. The Alaska Story Files contain correspondence, articles, article drafts, and research materials relating to published and unpublished stories by Sheldon. Story subjects include oil vs. caribou in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; the Nome to Provideniya (Siberia) friendship flights of 1988; a proposed Bering Sea tunnel; polar explorer postage stamps issued in 1986; and Arctic Ocean islands ceded to the Soviet Union in 1990. The Miscellaneous Alaska Subject Files and Alaska Publications concern a variety of Alaskan topics.

This collection was presented to the UAA Library by Jerome Sheldon in 1978, and transferred to the archives in 1979. Additions to the collection were made in 1983, 1995, 1996, and 1997. A deed of gift was signed in 1986.
