The U.S. Geological Survey was established in the Department of the Interior in 1879. Among its main functions are surveying, research, and investigations concerning topography, geology, and mineral and water resources, and the dissemination of data relating to these activities.

The collection consists of copies of reports on various coal claims and locations in the Bering River Coal Field in Alaska, 1909-1961. Included are reports on the Willoughby Group, Blue Bear Wardell Group, Pittsburgh Consolidated, Iowa, Blaine, the "Butte" coal claim of Harry White, the Alaska Smokeless Anthracite Coal Company, and the controller Bay Coal Fields. There are also copies of reports and correspondence concerning various subjects including the geology of the Bering River Coal field, Alaska coal lease laws (1914-1924), analysis of Bering River coal (1921-1926), and the Bering River Coal Company (1922).

This copy of the collection was placed on deposit at the Archives & Manuscripts Department in 1981.
