HARRIS M. WHITING (1888-1981). Papers; 1939-1965. 1.85 cu. ft.

Harris Murdock Whiting was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1888. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and then embarked on an engineering career. His work took him to California, Washington State, Alaska, Arizona, and British Columbia. From 1939 to 1942, Whiting was field engineer for the general contracting firm of Siems Drake-Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington for military projects in Alaska. The U.S. Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, Contract NOy-3750, involved construction of naval facilities at Sitka, Kodiak, Unalaska Island, Dutch Harbor, and Sand Point. From 1947 to 1952, Whiting was general manager for Drake Puget Sound for military projects concerning U.S. Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, Contract NOy- 13913. These projects were in Kodiak, Cape Sarichef on Unimak Island, Adak, Shemya, Cold Bay, and Attu. Harris Whiting died in 1981.

The collection consists of Harris M. Whiting's papers and photographs concerning Alaska and his career as a managing engineer for construction of military facilities in Alaska. The collection is divided into four series: personal papers, scrapbooks, publications, and photographs. The personal papers include Whiting's resume; his professional diary (1942-1943); technical reports and other information concerning military contracts for the construction of facilities in Alaska; souvenirs items; office cartoon drawings; an informational file on Barrow, Alaska; articles, research reports, and photographs concerning the Aleutian Islands by anthropologist Theodore P. Bank, II; and some articles on the Aleutian Islands. The scrapbooks are from the period Whiting worked in Alaska and contain correspondence, other original items, and newspaper and magazine clippings (1939-1944, 1947-1951). The publications include newspapers and newsletters, primarily from naval stations in Adak and Kodiak. Locations depicted in the photographs include Sitka, Juneau, Kodiak, Attu, Adak, Cape Sarichef on Unimak Island, Dutch Harbor, and Unalaska. Specific facilities pictured include Sitka Naval Air Station, U.S. Coast Guard light houses and other buildings at Cape Sarichef and Scotch Cap on Unimak Island, and the U.S. Naval Station, Adak.

The collection was presented to the archives by Barbara Allison in 2001.
