MARIA BROOKS. Papers; 1966-2006. 1.75 cu. ft.

Maria Brooks writes, directs, and produces historical documentaries for Waterfront Soundings Productions in Oakland, California. She has also been active in producing oral history projects. In 1983, Brooks compiled the Alaska Women's Oral History Collection, which includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews. In 1999, she created the documentary, "The Odyssey of Captain Healy," about Captain Michael Healy, who commanded the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bear in Alaskan coastal waters from 1886 to 1895. In 2005, she created the documentary, "Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women."

The collection consists of papers, videocassettes and discs from the oral history and documentary projects of Maria Brooks. The collection is divided into four series. The first series consists of the catalog and index of the Alaska Women's Oral History Project (1983). The archives also holds, in a separate collection, the interview transcripts and audiocassetes resulting from that project. The second series consists of papers and videocassettes from the making of the documentary, "The Odyssey of Captain Healy," as well as VHS videocassette and DVD copies of the completed work. The papers for this documentary include the production script with credit roll, correspondence, reviews, articles, and interview transcripts. The videocassettes include a tape copy of the completed documentary, duplicate tapes of the interviews, and master tapes of the interview (45 total videocassettes). The third series consists of papers, videocassettes and a CD-ROM from the making of the documentary, "Shipping Out," as well as a DVD copy of the completed work. The papers for this documentary include the teacher's companion guide and interview transcripts. The videocassettes consist of a DVCAM master tape of the documentary and duplicate tapes of all the interviews (16 total videocassettes). The fourth series consists of three Betacam SP videocassettes of an interview of whalesman Ernest Johnson, plus a transcript of the interview and a copy of a newspaper article about him.

The collection was presented to the archives by Maria Brooks in 2001. A deed of gift was signed in 2001. Additional materials were added in 2006. Maria Brooks retains copyright to the materials she created for the documentaries.
