JOHN B. LEWIS (1900-1978). Photograph Album; 1901-1903. .2 cu. ft.

John Benjamin Lewis was born in Xenia, Ohio, in 1900. While growing up, he traveled with his mother, who was a vaudeville performer. Lewis came to Alaska in the early 1920s after a period of service with the merchant marine. While in Alaska, he married Dorothy Garvin, and they moved to San Diego, California. During the Great Depression, he worked in a factory and later managed the janitorial staff of an office building. During World War II, he was a supervisor in an aircraft manufacturing plant. John B. Lewis died in San Diego, California, in 1978.

The collection consists of a Nome Gold Rush era photograph album once owned by John B. Lewis. The collection contains: a xerographic copy of the original album; the 86-page album containing 173 black and white prints; and 78 black and white preservation copy negatives of selected images. Subjects of the photographs include: voyages between Port Townsend, Washington, and Nome, Alaska, aboard the steamships Jeanie and Senator in 1901; soldiers and buildings at Fort Davis in Nome; a gold mine at Bench No. 7, Anvil Creek, in 1902 (E.
