A. J. Hewitt was a businessman and former stockholder of the Anchorage Times newspaper.
The collection consists of a letter by A. J. Hewitt regarding the operations of the Anchorage Times newspaper. The collection contains a copy of a three page letter from A. J. Hewitt to Alex H. McDonald of the Alaska Steamship Company in Fairbanks, Alaska. In the letter, dated November 29, 1929, Hewitt describes the operations of the newspaper, including the following information: position titles, monthly salaries and duties of the seven employees of the paper (manager and editor, associate editor, job printer, printer, two linotype operators, and bookkeeper); handling of overtime; payment of newsboys; payment of expense accounts; amount of circulation; and subscription rates. Hewitt gives the names of the associate editor and job printer as Fisk and Lawson, respectively. Attached to the letter is copy of the 1929 advertising rates for the newspaper, with rates per day and month for numbers of inches, and national advertising rates.
The collection was acquired by the archives in 2005.
