MOUNTAINEERING CLUB OF ALASKA. Newsletters and Miscellaneous Records; 1960-1981. .5 cu. ft.
The Mountaineering Club of Alaska is a non-profit corporation founded in 1958. Its mission is to "maintain, promote and perpetuate the association of persons who are interested in promoting, sponsoring, improving, stimulating and contributing to the exercise of skill and safety in the Art and Science of Mountaineering."
The collection consists of the newsletters and miscellaneous other records of the Mountaineering Club of Alaska. The newsletters are an incomplete set of copies of the club's newsletter, Scree, dated from 1960 to 1980. The collection also contains the following additional files: correspondence and forms relating to the club's committee on geographic names (1967, 1980-1981); two copies of the Alaska Alpine Club's newsletter, Descent (1975, 1977); and a copy of an unedited book manuscript entitled, White Winds: The Documented Story of America's Most Tragic High Altitude Mountaineering Accident, by Joe Wilcox, and related correspondence (1977, 1980). The manuscript concerns a climbing expedition of Mount McKinley in 1967.
The newsletters were presented to the archives by Bruce Merrell in 2007. The additional files were presented to the archives by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska with the papers of Grace and John Vincent Hoeman in 2006.
