Biographical note:
Charles O. Farciot was born in Corgemont, Switzerland in 1840. He became a United States citizen in 1858. Farciot was an inventor, steamship engineer, and photographer. Farciot operated photography studios in Arizona where he met the successful miner Ed Schieffelin. He came to Alaska in 1882 with a gold prospecting party from Arizona led by Schieffelin. Though the latter left in 1883, Farciot remained in Alaska working as a steamship engineer on the Yukon River until at least 1886. After leaving Alaska, Farciot started a photographic studio in San Francisco.

Collection description:
The collection consists of copied papers and photographs of Charles O. Farciot. The papers include biographical materials, historical articles concerning the Schieffelin prospecting trip and Farciot's Alaska photographs, and genealogical materials concerning the Farciot family. The photographs are photocopies of Farciot's original Alaska and Arizona albums (which contains 166 different images) and contact prints and negatives of the Alaska photographs and a selection of those taken in Arizona.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged into two series: papers and photographs. Papers are arranged by type and are in chronological order therein. Photographs are divided by type and by location therein.  

Digitized copies: The Alaska State Library provides a digitized copy of Alaska Album A in the Alaska Digital Archives.

Rights note: The Archives does not own rights to this collection. Ken Graham retains the rights to use photographs in this collection for commercial use. For duplication requests of images in the Alaska albums, please contact the Alaska State Library, Alaska Historical Collections.  The Alaska State Library owns an original copy of the Alaska album in their Wickersham State Historic Site photographs collection (ASL-PCA-277).
