Biographical note:
Isaac M. Preston was sent to appraise copper mining claims on Elliott Creek, a tributary of the Kotsina River northeast of Chitina. This journal concerns his trip from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Alaska and the return in July through October of 1904.

Collection description:
The collection consists of a typed foreword and transcript of Isaac M. Preston’s journal for the period of July 8 through October 7, 1904. The journal includes lists of mileage from different destinations and of travel expenses. Preston traveled by train from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Seattle, Washington, and then aboard the S.S. Santa Ana to Valdez by way of the Inside Passage through Juneau, Sitka, Yakutat, Kayak, and Ellamar. From Valdez, he traveled to the mines at Elliott Creek through Wortmanns, Beaver Dam Roadhouse, Ernestine, Tonsina, the Copper River, and the Kotsina River.
