Collection description:
The collection consists of 492 color slides taken by Charlotte E. Mauk during her travels in Alaska, 1944-1963.  There is also a list of slide numbers for a slide show given by Mauk on September 13, 1961, and some cards with notes on birds and other animals. Most of the slides are numbered and identified.  The majority of the slides depict Mauk’s trip to Alaska in 1961 and include images of Fairbanks, Fort Yukon, the Sheenjek River, camping at Lobo Lake with Olaus and Margaret Murie, Mount McKinley National Park, Camp Denali and its founder, conservationist Celia M. Hunter (1919-2001), and various other landscape views and wildflowers. Naturalist Adolph Muire (1899-1974) is also depicted in these slides. There are also slides from Mauk’s 1963 trip to Alaska, which include images of the Mendenhall, Lamplugh, Grand Pacific, and Reid Glaciers, as well as slides of her earlier travels in Alaska in 1944, 1945, and 1955 that depict the Ketchikan  and Matanuska Valley areas.  The collection also contains slides by other photographers, including Joe Hankins and Russell H. Varian, which depict Alaska wildlife and glaciers, as well as slides of wildlife drawings by Olaus J. Murie.
