Biographical note:
Arthur W. Hope was from Indiana. During World War II, he worked for Allison Engines, an aircraft engine manufacturer in Indianapolis, Indiana. He visited Alaska as a representative of Allison Engines in 1944, likely concerning Lend-Lease aircraft delivered from the United States to Russia via Alaska and Siberia. He may have also have been an officer in the U. S. Army Air Forces. Arthur W. Hope died in Daytona Beach, Florida in 2004.

Collection description:
The collection consists of World War II era photographs and papers of Arthur W. Hope. The collection contains: 60 different black and white prints; a memorandum from the Army Air Forces (AAF) Alaska Wing, Air Transport Command (ATC) concerning safety and security on airplane flights, received on a flight from Edmonton, Alberta to Fairbanks, Alaska on June 27, 1944; an Alaska Wing ATC special permit for Station 3, issued to Arthur W. Hope of Allison Engines on June 28, 1944; a receipt for $24.00 from Nome, Alaska, dated September 6, 1944; an invitation from the enlisted men of the 1469th AAF Base Unit, ATC, for their dance held at the Nome High School Gymnasium on September 23, 1944; a 1944 photo Christmas greeting card from Nome containing images of a fire in a fireplace and the interior of a chapel; a photo Christmas greeting card containing a picture of the Totem Inn; an envelope from the Wallace Hotel in Nome with a picture of the hotel; and a clipping from an envelope with the address for a V.B. Stratton, Aircraft Maintenance, 1466 AAF Base Unit, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Subjects of the photographs include: Arthur W. Hope and U.S. Army Air Forces officers at Fairbanks, Nome, and Galena in Alaska; the Wallace Hotel and streets in Nome; the road between Nome and Solomon; scenery in and around Fairbanks; the village of Galena and the Bishop Mountain Trading Company store; new P-39 “Airacobra” fighter aircraft on an airfield; an Army Air Forces officer conferring with a Russian officer in uniform; a locally made oil level indicator; and a stage show put on by Army Air Forces soldiers in a large Quonset hut building.
