Collection summary: Photograph album of a woman who worked at Emard Cannery in Anchorage, Alaska.
The young woman who created this album (her first name was Ann) worked at Emard Cannery in Anchorage in 1945. She left Anchorage in September of that year.
The collection consists of the photograph album of an unknown Emard Cannery employee from 1945. The 27 page album contains: four pages of memory leaves with the names, addresses and comments of 27 friends and coworkers; 61 original black and white prints; 7 black and white professional prints of workers and machinery inside Emard Cannery (Pages 2 and 3); 4 black and white photo post cards; and 18 black and white prints. Included with the album are 45 preservation copy negatives of selected images. The entries in the memory leaves are for people from Anchorage, Skagway, Juneau, Seattle and elsewhere. Subjects of the original prints include: a bowling league group photo (Page 1); Emard Cannery employees, buildings, docks, and boats (Pages 4, 5, 13-16); the Ambassador Club (Pages 5 and 6); the Fourth of July parade in Downtown Anchorage (Pages 6-8); a picnic (Page 17); and friends (Pages 9-11). The photo post cards (Pages 12 and 18) are Hewitt's Photos with the following captions: "Emard Cannery in winter's grip"; "Emard Cannery and the frozen tide"; "The Salmon Catch at Bristol Bay" (fish being unloaded from a tender); and "Clean-up" (a flock of gulls). Subjects of the professional prints (4 X 5 inch, sepia toned, pages 19-27) include: Downtown Anchorage, Independence Mine, Eklutna Cemetery, McKinley Park Hotel, and Mt. McKinley National Park, Matanuska Valley farms, log cabins and scenery.
