Biographical note:
Frank A. Bebey began teaching at the University of Alaska Anchoraage (UAA) Theater Department in 1978.  Prior to coming to Alaska, he had taught at Kennedy-King College in Chicago and Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania. While at UAA, he taught theater courses and designed sets for UAA’s theater productions. Frank Bebey has received numerous awards for his set designs from the American College Theatre Festival and received a national certificate of merit in the early 1990s for UAA’s production of Tracers at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Since 1969, he ran his own theatrical design and construction business. In Anchorage, his company was named Browhoon Design.  Bebey acted as a consultant and designed sets for Anchorage community theater organizations, such as the Anchorage Concert Association, Anchorage Community Theater, Out North, and the Anchorage Opera. For Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1981, Bebey designed the stage and altar from which the Pope performed mass. Bebey has also served as an advisor to Anchorage school theater programs.

Collection description:
The collection contains sketches, drawings, and plans for sets he developed for UAA productions and for his own business, Browhoon Design. He designed sets for Anchorage community theater groups such as the Anchorage Community Theater, Anchorage Concert Association, and Out North. The plays were staged at UAA, Alaska Pacific University, Out North and other theaters in Alaska. Included in this collection are photographs of his sets and performances. There is also an exhbit of Bebey’s designs that he submitted into a competition in Russia and the designs for the stage and alter created for Pope John Paul II’s visit.

Arrangement: Collection materials remain in the order they arrived at the Archives.
