Guide to the Alaska Nurses’ Association collection
1887-1995

Collection number: HMC-1107.
Creator: Alaska Nurses’ Association.
Title: Alaska Nurses’ Association collection.
Dates: 1887-1995.
Volume of collection: 17.55 cubic feet.
Language of materials: Collection materials are in English.
Collection summary: Historical materials relating to nursing in Alaska.

Organizational history:
Compiling these papers as a historical project for the 1975-1976 Bicentennial, Doris Southall, volunteer project director, along with Catherine Gair, Mary Richards, and Elva Scott, sent out hundreds of questionnaires to active and retired nurses requesting information about their nursing education, dates and places of experiences, as well as comments on health conditions, social and political events, and observations of daily life. The results of the survey, along with accompanying manuscript materials and photographs were deposited with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska and Polar Regions Collections. Since the original gift, several additions to the collection have been made by individual donors.

Collection description:
The Alaska Nurses' Association Collection includes materials dated 1867 to the present.  Included are corporate records of the Alaska Nurses' Association, which was founded in 1951; histories of nursing and health care in the North; publications which include articles, manuscripts, and newsletters; completed questionnaires and memoirs submitted by nurses who have practiced their profession in Alaska; and photographs.

Approximately half of the material consists of administrative records, publications, and recollections. The collection also contains field notes which document emergency health care provided to the victims of the 1964 earthquake which affected southcentral Alaska. Photographs in the collection are both of individual nurses and nursing related activities.

Arrangement: The collection is divided into sixteen series.

Digitized copies: Digital copies of some collection photographs are available through the Alaska’s Digital Archives. Search “Alaska Nurses' Association”. For information about obtaining digital copies, please contact Archives and Special Collections.

Rights note: The Archives does not hold copyright to all materials in the collection. Please consult one of the archivists for further information.

Preferred citation: Alaska Nurses’ Association collection, Archives and Special Collections, Consortium Library, University of Alaska Anchorage.

Related materials: A listing of health and medicine-related collections at the Archives is available in a topical guide.

Separated materials: The ship logs of the M/V Hygiene were moved into their own collection, hmc-1109.

Custodial history: The papers of the Alaska Nurses' Association were initially presented to the University of Alaska Fairbanks by Doris Southall on behalf of the Alaska Nurses' Association. Several later additions were made by a number of individuals.

Acquisition note: In 2012, at the request of the Alaska Nurses’ Assocation, the collection was transferred from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Elmer E. Rasmuson Library’s Alaska and Polar Regions Collections to the UAA/APU Consortium Library Archives and Special Collections.

Processing information: Sharon Ashley performed initial collection organization. Phyllis Demuth Movius and Michael Ray Wilson wrote an extensive guide to the collection in 1995. The guide was converted to the format used by Archives and Special Collections by Arlene Schmuland in 2012.
