Biographical note:
Daniel McDonell owned several mining claims in the Fairbanks area. The mining claims he owned included Niggerhead Association, Nowonder Association, Ready Money Association Mining Claim, Happy Home Association, Rough and Ready Association Mining Claim, The Welcome Stranger Association Mining Claim, The Big Bend Mining Claim, The Innoko Association, The Wild Goose Mining Claim, and The Big Timber Mining Claim place mining claims. He worked as a prospector for L.C. Doheny. Upon his death, around 1947, some of his lands were sold to Strandberg and Sons Inc. and some were given to University of Alaska.

M. James Mullooly was born in Ireland in 1892. He came to the United States and found work in Alaska on gold dredges. Mullooly met McDonell while working in Alaska and lived as his boarder in Seattle, Washington. Mullooly married Bernadette McDonell Kohl (a relation of Daniel McDonell). Mullooly died in 1970.

Collection description:
The collection contains papers and photographs of Daniel McDonell and M. James Mullooly. Included are land deeds, purchases, and transfers regarding McDonell’s various mining claims and WWI short stories written by Mullooly.

Custodial history: Bill and Louise Sharp received the collection after the death of Bernadette McDonell Kohl (M. James Mullooly’s wife). The Sharps, caretakers of Mrs. Kohl, donated the collection to Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association in 2014.

Acquisition note: Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association donated the materials to Archives in 2014 and a deed of gift was signed.
