Collection summary: Photographs of a member of the 404th Bombardment Squadron who served at Shemya Air Base dueing World War II.

Biographical note:
James H. Sample was born March 7, 1926 in Brawley, California. He entered the United States Air Force in 1943 and served as a pilot in the 404th Bombardment Squadron at Shemya Air Base in the Aleutian Islands from January to October 1945. He later lived in Sherman, Texas and was the chair of the organizing committee for the Shemya World War II Veterans Reunions in 1991 and 1992. Sample died in 2008.

Collection description:
The collection contains 44 prints depicting airplanes, aerial views of locations in the Aleutians, and scenes of military life on Shemya.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged in the order in which it arrived in the Archives.

Alternative formats: The collection contains xerographic copies of original album pages with handwritten captions.

Custodial history: The photographs were collected by Hank Frese and donated to the Archives as part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers.

Acquisition note: The photographs were originally part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers, presented to the archives on behalf of the Henry K. Frese Sr. family with the assistance of fellow Shemya veteran Dan Lange, in 2006.

Processing information: The photographs were removed from the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers and described by Gwen Sieja in 2015.
