Biographical note:
Harold F. “Hal” Beery was born in Salem, Iowa in 1917. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940. Beery served with the 404th Bombardment Squadron as a B-24 aircraft commander, and in 1943 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying 40 bombing missions in the Aleutian Islands. He continued his military career, serving as a B-29 aircraft commander during the Korean War, and retired from the Air Force in 1968. Beery died in Billings, Montana in 2015.

Collection description:
The collection consists of 12 black and white prints blown up to 8 inches by 10 inches from the original photographs. The prints consist primarily of interior and exterior shots of the tents where Beery and the other men in his unit lived in the Aleutian Islands. Activities depicted in the photographs include poker games, reading, and buying supplies from fellow soldiers. There is also a group shot of the 404th Bombardment Squadron at Barksdale Field in Louisiana, and a photograph of a map of a bombing mission in which Beery participated. Also included in the collection are xerographic copies of the captions written on the back of the original photographs.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged in no discernible order.

Custodial history: The photographs were collected by Hank Frese and donated to the Archives as part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers.

Acquisition note: The photographs were originally part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers, presented to the archives on behalf of the Henry K. Frese Sr. family with the assistance of fellow Shemya veteran Dan Lange, in 2006.

Processing information: The photographs were removed from the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers and described by Gwen Sieja in 2015.
