Collection summary: Photographs of a member of the 404th Bombardment Squadron, who served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.

Biographical note:
Thaddeus C. Buszek was born in Michigan in 1922. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. From 1944 to 1945 Buszek served as a pilot with the 404th Bombardment Squadron on Shemya in the Aleutian Islands. In August 1944, he was the co-pilot on a mission that was forced to land on the small island of Ilak because of inclement weather on Shemya. Buszek died in Marietta, Georgia in 1997.

Collection description:
The collection consists of copies of photographs taken by Ted Buszek during his time on Shemya, or collected by him later. Subjects of the photographs include aerial shots of the Aleutian Islands; buildings and scenery on Shemya; group and individual shots of Buszek and the other men in his unit; social gatherings; and the rescue of Buszek and the other men on the mission that landed on Ilak. The collection also includes negatives corresponding to some of the prints.

Custodial history: The original photographs were loaned to Hank Frese for copying, and the copies were donated to the Archives as part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers.

Acquisition note: The photographs were originally part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers, presented to the archives on behalf of the Henry K. Frese Sr. family with the assistance of fellow Shemya veteran Dan Lange, in 2006.

Processing information: The photographs were removed from the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers and described by Gwen Sieja in 2015.

Location of originals: The location of the original photographs is unknown.
