Collection summary: Primarily photographs of a member of the Detachment Engineers who was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.

Biographical note:
Earnest Dwight Ringland was born in Riverside California on August 6, 1922. After graduating from high school in 1940, Ringland attended Indiana Central University, with a major in mathematics and minors in physics and history. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and trained as a combat engineer. As a member of the Detachment Engineers stationed on Shemya, Ringland’s tasks included tarring roofs, spreading sand on runways, and planting trees. Ringland died on January 12, 2002.

Collection description:
The collection includes xerographic copies of the original albums, a photocopy of the booklet, So You’re Going Home, copies of 110 original black and white prints, and 8 contact sheets. Subjects of the photographs include Ringland’s training classmates at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, aircraft, scenes on Shemya, and individual and group shots of Ringland and other men serving with him on Shemya.

Custodial history: Earnest Dwight Ringland’s original photographs were loaned to Hank Frese for copying. Frese’s copies were donated to the Archives as part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers.

Acquisition note: The photographs were originally part of the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers, presented to the archives on behalf of the Henry K. Frese Sr. family with the assistance of fellow Shemya veteran Dan Lange, in 2006.

Processing information: The photographs were removed from the Henry K. “Hank” Frese papers and described by Gwen Sieja in 2015.

Location of originals: The location of Ringland’s original photographs is unknown.
