Facilitators Amanda Albright and JoAnn Gonzalez-Major, both Instructional Designers in the Faculty Technology Center, will convene this discussion bi-weekly throughout the Spring 2010 term. Participating faculty will receive a light lunch at each session and a copy of Bonk and Zhang’s Empowering Online Learning: 100+ Activities for Reading, Reflecting, Displaying, and Doing (2008).
In Empowering Online Learning, the authors propose the R2D2 (read, reflect, display, and do) model as a “framework for designing online learning environments and activities that benefit all types of learners (visual, auditory, observational, and kinesthetic) from a wide variety of backgrounds and skill levels”. The authors state:
The R2D2 model aligns well with various learning style and multiple intelligence measures. In particular, it draws on ideas from Kolb’s (1984) learning cycle, McCarthy’s 4MAT system (1987), and the VARK learning style model of Fleming and Mills (1992)…the R2D2 model proposes an integration of four types of learning activities: (1) reading, (2) reflecting, (3) displaying, and (4) doing. (Bonk and Zhang, 2008, p. 4-5).
If you are interested in how you might be able to empower and engage your students in online and blended learning courses or you simply wish to investigate the 100+ activities suggested as part of the R2D2 model, come join in the initial discussion on Wednesday, January 27, 11:30-1:00 in LIB 214. Participation via eLive for faculty at community campuses is encouraged.
