I am a reference archivist in the Archives and Special Collections (A&SC) department of the Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage. What is a reference archivist? Well, I help people travel back in time, metaphorically speaking of course. An archives preserves and makes available past and present records for research use into perpetuity. (Well, we try our best to make them last into ‘perpetuity.’) There are multiple types of archives that preserve multiple types of materials. The Consortium Library’s Archives holds collections of personal papers, organizational records, and University records. As an archivist, I help facilitate access to these collections by arranging and describing collections, helping researchers find collections pertinent to their research, and perform outreach to let people know about our collections.
Other organizations that I am a part of are the Filipino American National Historical Society, Alaska Chapter; Alaskero Partnership Organization (APO); Filipino Community of Anchorage Alaska. As a Filipino Canadian American, I believe that it is important to preserve the American experience of the diverse population that makes up the United States.
