Need Your Input Regarding Professional Development Funds

January 8th, 2008

Author: Gail Kaume

Happy 2008 one and all! I know I have not yet sent out an inaugural address as your new Chair, but a burning issue has arisen for which I would appreciate feedback from the PNC membership. Please respond by commenting to this post.

One of our members is quite interested in attending the Joint Chapters meeting in Las Vegas – http://www.med.unr.edu/ncnmlg – and asked about applying for the PNC Professional Development award to help with the costs of attending. The award is intended to go toward PNC sponsored events or classes that have been developed by PNC members. However, since we are not having an annual conference this year, I would like to get your input about using some of the monies allocated for this award to help members attend the Joint Chapters meeting taking place in Las Vegas next month.

While this is not a sanctioned tri-chapter meeting, the planning committee for this conference is very concerned about low registration numbers and I know any of our members would be welcomed warmly. Please let me and your Board members know how you feel about the possibility of designating some of the Professional Development funds to support our members attending the Joint Chapters meeting this year. Thanks!

  1. This seems like a good use of the Professional Development funds, especially since there will not be a PNC annual meeting this year.

  2. This is a great way to encourage more participation.

It seems to me like an ideal way to use the funds.

As long as we don’t open the door to using PNC Professional Development funds for outside sanctioned events in years that PNC is sponsoring an annual meeting, I think this is good use of those monies.

  5. I’d suggest inviting other PNC members to apply for funds to attend this meeting. In lieu of our annual meeting, it seems appropriate to use these funds for the Joint Chapters meeting.

  6. I think the reasoning sounds good, and I’d support it considering Pam’s comment above. Liisa Rogers, Healthwise, Inc.

  7. I like the idea of being flexible with the funds assuming there’s enough in the bank for next year. Also, supporting other chapters benefits all of us in the long run.

  8. I agree with Pam’s response.

  9. I support using this year’s award money for attending the joint chapters’ conference in Las Vegas, since there won’t be a PNC meeting this year.

I have to agree with the above comments. It is appropriate to spend the award money for the Las Vegas conference. Las Vegas is expensive; I was there for a few days last fall.

  11. Thanks everyone for your comments so far – keep ‘em coming!

Remember, we *will* be having PNC-sponsored CE this Fall and plan to protect some of the Professional Development funds so folks can get support to come to Seattle for CE, if needed.

  12. Absolutely agree to designating some of the funds to support our members in attending other Chapters’ meetings this year.

  13. I especially appreciate all the responses provided. My thoughts echoes as well. Considering that we don’t have a formal PNC conference this year, and it’s a special circumstance with the Vegas low registration, I believe it would be (a one time) ok to use the PDF funds for a PNC member to attend the Vegas conference this year. (Hopefully this will open the door to more official tri-chapter meetings!) However, I do believe that we should earmark some of those funds for the Fall 2008 Seattle CE participants, as more PNC members may need assistance with that. I’m glad that is being recognized and subsequently earmarked.

  14. Just to be contrary, I think that if this were an official tri-chapter meeting, I’d totally agree, but the two SW chapters specifically did not want this to be a tri-chapter meeting. I’d like to see the PNC money go towards the PNC CE days next fall, since we will be having two days of CE and a social event. This would enable more of our members to attend our event.

  15. Thanks to everyone for their input on this. The PNC treasury is quite healthy and the Board and majority of those who commented agree that this will be okay as a one-time use of professional development funds. We will also have funding available for members to attend CE in the Fall. I will post another message announcing this option to the membership. Thanks again.
