Anyone else taking the MLA Web 2.0 course?

April 7th, 2008

Author: Kathy Murray

Hi all,

I signed up for this course while I was in Seattle.  I figured my sister had Internet access, so I’d be able to start the course there.  LOL!  Not only did I find that a 7 week old baby precludes any chance of this, I rarely had time to even read and respond to email!.  Got back to Anchorage and then spend the last week on our 40th birthday party.  HSIS was begun as part of the Native Medical Center, had the collection moved to the university and the staff funded by the State Library, before all became part of the University in 1993.  Was lots of fun getting all the old pictures pulled together and on display, having an invited lunch for some key players, and then an “open house/birthday bash” last Friday.

I’m just now starting on the MLA course.  So — to my question – is anyone else in the course?

    Kathy,

I am also taking the course, but I doubt I’ll get credit. I don’t have enough time to play with each Web 2.0 ‘treasure’ before the next week arrives. I think it is fast-paced for those of us who also work. I am hoping that it will stay up past the closing date for those of us who don’t care whether or not we get credit. I think it is good, just a lot!

    Kathy,

I am taking the course, but like many others apparently, I am behind as well. At least you have good excuses, Kathy! One of the last emails I read said, “For those of you who are behind remember you will only have till May 18th (2 weeks after the end of the course) to complete assignments.”

  3. Looks like a number of us who signed up are behind! Bob Pringle

  4. Well, I was planning to be, but then I fell down LOL! But hey, knowing that you’re just starting makes me want to try to catch up!

  5. I doubt I’ll get credit since the blog I set up is the PNC blog and they won’t be able to see the posts … but I’m doing it more so I can learn about the bits and pieces, rather than getting MLA credit.

I am taking the course. It’s fun, fun, fun! I have been spending, probably, too much time. It will be catch up time at work when I’m done! I’ve built a blog on Blogger for an outside group I work with and added feedburner to it to send notifications to members by email when a new post is made. I have a much more concrete idea about the value of all of the Web 2.0 pieces now. I’ve taken several classes where we just sat and listened. Hands-on is now making all of that sink in.

I’m glad so many of you are enjoying the Web 2.0 course. If there’s interest, I could develop a similar (maybe less intense) course for the region later on this year.

  8. Alison,
I for one would like that. As many comments on the MLA site state … their pace is too fast. I also think that if we had a course for our region, we could create and share resources that would be useful. (As opposed to setting up a wiki about my upcoming cruise!!)
