Biographical note:
In the summer of 1931, the unknown woman who wrote this diary took a sightseeing trip from Hamburg, New York, through Canada to Alaska, and finally ending in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1935, she took another trip to Brazil and islands in the Caribbean.

Collection description:
The collection consists of an unknown woman’s travel diary from a sightseeing trip taken to Alaska, from July 21 to September 15, 1931. The account begins in Hamburg, New York, and ends in Cleveland, Ohio. The trip was made by train, steamboat, steamship, and automobile. The traveler sailed aboard the S.S. Alameda, captained by Joseph Ramsauer, from Seattle to Skagway on the trip up the Inside Passage. Places in the United States and Canada visited, or traveled through, included the following: Toronto, Port McNicoll, Port Arthur, Winnipeg, Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Sicamous, Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Point Alexander, Petersburg, Kake, Skagway, Lake Bennett, Whitehorse, Dawson, Circle City, Fort Yukon, Beaver, Rampart, Tanana, Nenana, Fairbanks, College, McKinley Park, Curry, Talkeetna, Anchorage, Seward, Valdez, Cordova, Juneau, Portland, Spokane, Yellowstone Park, Cody, St. Paul, Duluth, Buffalo, Detroit, and Cleveland. The diary also contains a few pages of entries from a summer 1935 trip to Brazil and the West Indies, including stops in Nassau, Bahamas, and Kingston, Jamaica. In the back of the diary are names and addresses of people she met during her travels.
