Biographical note:
Alvin and Betty Verser were from Sacramento, California. They toured Western Canada and Alaska by car with a small travel trailer from June 14 to July 15, 1966. Their trip included stops in Prince George, Whitehorse, Anchorage, Seward, Fairbanks, Dawson, Skagway, Haines, Juneau, Prince Rupert, and Vancouver. The trip also included a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Railway from Whitehorse to Skagway, and passage aboard the Alaska Marine Highway ferry Motor Vessel (M/V) Matanuska from Skagway to Prince Rupert. Alvin Verser died in Sacramento, California, in 1996.

Collection description:
The collection contains the contents of a scrapbook Alvin and Betty Verser created during their trip through Alaska and Canada. The collection contains a trip journal written by Betty Verser with daily entries including odometer readings and daily mileage, maps the Verser’s collected during the trip, camping and fishing permits, photographs and photo post cards, and receipts. The maps include tourist maps of Whitehorse and the Yukon Territory, Stanley Park (Vancouver, B.C.), and Prince George. Subjects of the photographs include Alvin and Betty Verser camping and fishing, campgrounds, cities, highways, ferries, ports, and the White Pass and Yukon Railway. Cities depicted in the photographs include Whitehorse (Yukon Territory), Anchorage, Seward, Glennallen, Dawson (Yukon Territory), Skagway, Wrangell, and Vancouver. Subjects of the Alaskan photo post cards include various scenery and wildlife, the cities of Fairbanks and Skagway, Mendenhall Glacier, the tribal house at Kasaan, and the Alaska Marine Highway ferries M/V Matanuska and M/V Malaspina.

Alternative formats: The collection contains a xerographic copy of the original scrapbook which indicates the original order of the photographs and papers that were removed from the scrapbook.

Processing information: The collection originally arrived to Archives as a scrapbook. The scrapbook was dismantled, photographs, labels, and papers removed, and the collection described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2005. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Veronica Denison in 2015.
