Biographical note:
Sergeant Stokes (no first name provided) was a member of the Post Signal Staff at Fort Richardson, Alaska, during World War II. He arrived at Fort Richardson in February of 1943 and was stationed there until at least March of 1945. Stokes may have been the supply sergeant for his unit on the post.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era photograph album of a Sergeant Stokes. The collection contains 60 original black and white prints from the album. Subjects of the photographs include: Sergeant Stokes and fellow soldiers at Fort Richardson and Anchorage; buildings on Fort Richardson (barracks, service club, chapel, supply room, etc.); 4th Avenue in Anchorage; the USO building and houses in Anchorage; Alaska Defense Command commander General Simon B. Buckner at his desk; snow plows clearing snow from the landing strip; a sled dog team outside the McKinley Park Hotel; and scenery. Several of Stokes’ fellow soldiers are identified by name.

Arrangement: Photographs are in the order they appeared in the album. Photograph numbers in the container list refer to the page number and position on page, generally top to bottom and left to right, based on the placement of the photographs in the original album. Where there is only one photograph on the page, only that number is used.

Alternative formats: The collection contains a xerox copy of the original album.

Acquisition note: The collection was purchased by the Archives in 2007 from internet auction.

Processing information: This collection was described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2007. Once the album was photocopied, photographs were removed from the album and placed in size order in enclosure sheets. The guide to the collection was reformatted to meet current standard by Arlene Schmuland in 2013, the images were placed into their original order at that time.
